Karen graduated from Franklin Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa. with an honors degree in History. She continued her education by receiving a M.A. in American History and an M.B.A. from Columbia University in NY.
For the next three decades, Karen held a variety of marketing and management positions with increasing levels of responsibility in the financial services industry. Her assignments with Citicorp, American Express, Chase Manhattan Bank, and Capital One gave her experience in retail banking management, product management, market research, new product development, budgeting, and advertising.
Approximately half of Karen’s private sector experience included leadership positions in community and regional banks. That is when Karen became extremely active in community service. She has served over a dozen community arts, human services, and animal welfare organizations. Most recently, she was the Signature Project Manager for her Rotary’s dental care access program and she has been on the board of directors for the Community Action Agency for seven years. Karen is currently working with a group of community leaders to establish a detox facility in Frederick and she is a member of the County’s Human Trafficking Task Force.
Board of Aldermen
From 2009-2013, Karen served as the President Pro Tem of the Board of Aldermen for the City of Frederick. During that time she held numerous positions as the liaison to community organizations as well as serving as the Chairwoman of the Washington Council of Governments (WASHCOG) and the Vice-Chair of the Legislative Committee for the Maryland Municipal League (MML).
House of Delegates
Karen was elected to the House of Delegates (HOD) in 2014, where she serves on the Health and Government Operations Committee (HGO) and the Health Occupations and Long Term Care and the Health Facilities and Pharmaceuticals Subcommittees. In addition, she represents the House as the liaison to the State Advisory Council on Hereditary and Congenital Disorders and the Maryland Commission on Caregiving. Karen also Chairs the Finance Committee of the Women’s Caucus.
Interests and hobbies
Karen has resided in Frederick for twenty-two years. Both her daughter (Melissa Sophie) and grandson (Caleb) reside in Frederick as well. Karen is an avid reader, skier, and swimmer. She also enjoys walking her three rescue dogs: Yitzhak, Andy, and Poppy.
